SOAK is an innovative architecture and design studio operating at the intersection of daily life and craft. Led by Alastair Selven ARB RIBA.

Our work is defined by four guiding principles: Craft, Atmosphere, Collaboration, and Sustainability. These principles shape every project, guiding us in creating spaces that are both thoughtful and enduring.

CRAFT
Every project has the potential to be beautifully realised, regardless of budget or materials. For us, craft means care, precision, and attention to detail at every stage of the design process.

We focus on how materials are sourced, how they meet, and how they age, considering their interaction with light, texture, and use. Each project is shaped by countless decisions, resulting in a cohesive and intentional design. At SOAK, we avoid assumptions or generic solutions—every design is unique, responding to its context, its purpose, and the aspirations of its users.

ATMOSPHERE
Architecture should evoke emotion and reflect the unique character of its setting. We design spaces that feel distinctive and memorable, offering more than functionality.

We think about the interplay of light and shadow, the balance of openness and enclosure, and how spaces can feel calm, dramatic, or uplifting. From the comfort of a secluded corner to the openness of a lofty ceiling or the carefully framed view of a landscape, our work is about crafting thoughtful environments that resonate with their users.

COLLABORATION
We believe in a collaborative design process, where ideas are shared, conversations are encouraged, and the best outcomes are achieved together.

Our process includes workshops, sketches, and discussions that invite dialogue and feedback. We use clear communication and accessible tools to make it easy for clients to stay engaged. We value our clients’ time and strive to make collaboration seamless and rewarding. By working closely together, we create spaces that are not only beautifully designed but also deeply personal and meaningful.

SUSTAINABILITY
Sustainability is embedded in our approach to design. We favour natural, breathable materials and minimise the use of plastics, steel, and concrete wherever possible. By integrating environmental responsibility into every project, we create buildings that are both considerate and enduring.

We make meaningful interventions, using natural materials to create immersive spaces—always thoughtfully designed and made with care.
